Tipppsy trailer launch: Mahesh Bhatt explains why Neha Dhupia’s “Only sex and Shah Rukh Khan sells” quote is not valid anymore: “Sex has lost its allure in this age of smartphones”

The trailer of the upcoming crime drama, Tipppsy, was launched today at a multiplex in Mumbai. The event was attended by director Deepak Tijori, lead actresses Alankrita Sahai, Natasha Suri, Kainaat Arora, Nazia Hussain and Sonia Birje and actors Harjinder Singh and Mandeep Kaur Sandhu. Deepak’s mentor Mahesh Bhatt and close friend Pooja Bhatt also graced the occasion and rocked the show with their quotes.

Mahesh Bhatt saw the trailer of Tipppsy and remarked, “It caters to the pace of the times that we live in. The only kind of content which will work needs to have a certain amount of energy, vitality and sensuality!”

The story of the film, as evident from the trailer, is about five girls who go for a bachelorette bash in Goa. After their drinks are spiked, they find themselves in a soup as they discover a dead body in their bungalow. The mouth of the deceased person, amusingly, is stuffed with a female undergarment.

On this, Mahesh Bhatt said, “I hope the girls don’t have an unhappy ending. I want the girls to come back unscathed.” Pointing at the male actors seated in the audi, the veteran filmmaker said, “I see those guys who gave them a spiked drink. I want to give them a bloody nose!” He then asked the actor who dies in the film, “How the hell did you get the panty in your mouth?” As expected, it raised a lot of laughs.

Bhatt saab was not done. He told Deepak Tijori, “I am happy your film has got a U/A certificate. It should have got a double A!”

During the question and answer session, when asked about the sensuality bit, Mahesh Bhatt observed, “Without sensuality, the human race would not be where it has come. It’s looked down upon by people. We, from the entertainment world, have come under fire for using this essential animal-need in men to our advantage.”

Another journalist asked him whether Neha Dhupia’s legendary quote “Only sex and Shah Rukh Khan sells” stands true today. Mahesh Bhatt disagreed, “No, I don’t think so. Sex has lost its allure in this age where images come into your smartphone. The allure of sex, in those days when there was no internet, was different. People had to throng cinema houses to consume erotic content.”

He added, “When you combine fast-paced edgy content with sensuality, then it’s like blood in the shark pool. When there’s blood in the pool, the sharks come running. Similarly, content which blends sensuality and crime and promises fast-paced engaging content, people get drawn to it. Look at your own tastes when you go home at night, what do you search for on OTT platforms? You’d mostly want to see a fast-paced film. That’s why such content is available in abundance from across the world.”

Mahesh Bhatt stated, “Today, you can’t define the word ‘Bollywood’. The doors are flung open. Humanity doesn’t know where the world is going. Anybody who thinks he has the answer is bullshitting to you. You can’t reduce the journey of cinema to one quote given by someone way back in time.”

Pooja Bhatt added to her father’s answer, “For Jism (2003), there was a line around the block at Gaiety-Galaxy for tickets. It promised sensuality but also looked inward. Jism 2 (2012), on the other hand, grabbed more eyeballs because of the obvious casting and also the previous part was a hit. But it didn’t look as inwards as part 1. We have seen them all. We have seen enough good-looking bodies. But if there’s no soul beyond that body, then you can’t grab people’s interest beyond a point. Hence, sensuality must look inwards for it to make a mark.”

Tipppsy releases in cinemas on May 10.

Akshay Kumar’s niece Simar Bhatia to debut opposite Agastya Nanda in Sriram Raghavan’s Ikkis? Here’s what we know

Akshay Kumar’s niece Simar Bhatia to debut opposite Agastya Nanda in Sriram Raghavan’s Ikkis? Here’s what we know

Sriram Raghavan’s upcoming film Ikkis is not only bringing an intriguing story to the big screen but also marking the grand cinematic debuts of two exciting newcomers – Agastya Nanda and Simar Bhatia. While Agastya Nanda’s name might already ring a bell for some – he is the grandson of the legendary Amitabh Bachchan, he also made his OTT debut with Zoya Akhtar’s 2023 musical The Archies. However, Ikkis marks his feature film debut on the big screen. Now, another new face will be introduced in the film, Simar Bhatia. Bhatia, the niece of Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, is all set to make her acting debut opposite Nanda in Ikkis.

According to a report in Peeping Moon, a source revealed, “Although Alka is a camera-shy person and has always stayed away from the limelight despite producing several movies with Akshay, her daughter Simar has always been interested in acting and is excited to get on a film set to live her dream.”

The report further stated that Simar Bhatia approached a different route and secured her debut project on her merit. While details about Bhatia’s character are still under wraps, we do know that she will be the romantic lead opposite Agastya Nanda. She has reportedly shot her portions for the film.

Ikkis, which translates to “twenty-one” in Hindi, is reportedly a coming-of-age human drama. The film’s central theme is said to revolve around the emotional bond between a father and son, set against the backdrop of the historic 1971 Indo-Pak war. Agastya Nanda steps into the role of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetrapal, whereas veteran star Dharmendra will play the role of his father, Brigadier M.L. Khetrapal.

For unversed, Arun Khetarpal was a Second Lieutenant in the Indian Army who posthumously received the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military award, for his exemplary courage and sacrifice during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. A memorial named “Arun’s Chowk” was built at the spot where he fought valiantly, and it stands as a tribute to his bravery.

Ikkis will be released in theatres on January 10, 2025.

PVR Inox stops playing ads in certain premium screens to increase footfalls and number of shows

PVR Inox stops playing ads in certain premium screens to increase footfalls and number of shows

The era of multiplexes brought a lot of positive changes. It gave moviegoers an opportunity to watch diverse content and also provided them with plush seats, superior sound systems and visual quality. On the flipside, viewers were forced to pay through their nose for the tickets and also snacks. The other disappointing factor in multiplexes, especially those run by PVR, is the number of ads played before the film and during the interval. It’s common for shows to start 10 to 15 minutes late as viewers are compelled to see ads and trailers that they are not really interested in. However, now things are about to change for the better.

As per a report in Money Control, the length of the ads slotted during a show has been cut from 35 minutes to 10 minutes. The 25 minutes of time saved, as a result, in each show will be utilized by the multiplex chain to add more shows in a day.

As per the new arrangement, patrons won’t be bombarded with ads during intervals. Instead, they’ll only be shown trailers of upcoming movies. Renaud Palliere, Chief of The Luxury Collection and Innovation, PVR INOX Limited, revealed, “The advertising revenue loss will be compensated with the additional footfalls by having one more show. Admissions generate ticket sales as well as F&B sales.”

At present, ad-free shows are playing in PVR Inox’s premium formats like Director’s Cut and Insignia in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru etc. Renaud Palliere stated, “In this segment (premium screen), people are time conscious. Also, a lot of these ads were countrywide and were not focused towards that particular audience.”

He also confirmed, “We will soon be opening (ad-free movies) in Pune and very soon, it will follow in other premium screens. Within the next few months, we are looking at extending beyond the current batch.”

However, there’s no confirmation on whether patrons, who frequent the regular screens and IMAX, will get to enjoy films without ads. What probably prompted PVR management to make this decision exclusively for premium screens is that the weak performance of films has not affected footfalls in these theatres as much.

Renaud Palliere continued, “From a luxury point of view, we are not seeing as much impact of the tepid line-up as the rest of the screens because the experience goes beyond movie watching. Luxury in many ways has shown resilience in terms of occupancy which is not fully impacted by the performance of movies.”

As per the Money Control articles, the premium screens make up 15% of the total 1,741 screens across PVR Inox properties. Palliere confirmed that this number will go up to 20% in less than 24 months.
