Tumbbad cinematographer Pankaj Kumar makes directorial debut with Film Bazaar-selected tribal epic Konyak
Renowned cinematographer Pankaj Kumar, known for visually stunning films like Tumbbad and Ship of Theseus, is stepping into the director’s chair with Konyak, a tribal action drama set in the culturally rich landscapes of northeast India. Selected for the prestigious NFDC Screenwriters Lab 2024 at Film Bazaar, the project marks Kumar’s highly anticipated feature directorial debut.
A Vision Rooted in Heritage
Konyak follows the journey of Thungpang, a young warrior who must navigate a deadly conflict between headhunting tribes. Guided by prophetic visions, he confronts betrayal and honor as he faces Sangba, a former friend turned enemy. Written by Uddhav Ghosh, the film delves into themes of identity, resilience, and heritage.
Ghosh, whose travels in Nagaland inspired the story, described the vision behind the project. A report by Variety quoted him saying, “The vision was always clear – to create an action epic that felt raw, unfiltered, and steeped in authenticity, drawing on the primal storytelling of films like Fury Road and Apocalypto. With Pankaj Kumar now on board as director, his visual mastery elevates this film into the cinematic spectacle it deserves to be.”
Kumar’s Take on Directing Konyak
Pankaj Kumar, whose cinematography credits include Brahmastra Part One: Shiva and Talvar, expressed his excitement about the project: “The vision for Konyak is to create something immersive and untamed, a film that lives and breathes on the big screen, where every frame tells a story of endurance and heritage. As a director, coming from a background in cinematography, this is the kind of project that lets me bring all those elements together.”
The film, which will be shot in Konyak Naga and Hindi languages, is a passion project for Kumar, produced through his newly founded Jiboom Studios.
Mentorship and Market Selection
The project has received guidance from script editor Claire Dobbin, who described it as: “Much more than an action movie. It is a compelling story of betrayal, courage, and resilience and shines a light on a little-known, but unforgettable people – the Konyak.”
Marten Rabarts, head of IFFR Pro at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and lab mentor, highlighted the film’s focus on indigenous narratives: “Uddhav Ghosh is exploring the long-overshadowed stories of indigenous First Nations people and in collaboration with them is helping unearth intense and complex histories.”

Badshah’s club in Chandigarh hit by crude bombs, investigation on: Reports
A chilling incident shook Chandigarh’s Sector 26 early Tuesday morning when two crude bomb explosions were reported near Seville Bar and Lounge, a club owned by renowned singer and rapper Badshah. The blasts also occurred near The De’orra Club, located in the same vicinity.
Details of the Incident
The explosions occurred around 4 a.m., with eyewitnesses reporting that two individuals arrived on a bike and hurled the bombs near the clubs before fleeing the scene. The blasts shattered the glass windows of Seville Bar and Lounge, causing significant damage but fortunately resulting in no casualties.
Police and forensic teams promptly arrived at the scene to begin investigations. While officials have confirmed the use of crude bombs, they have refrained from disclosing further details about the perpetrators or motive.
Police Response and Current Status
Preliminary investigations suggest the bombs were thrown with the intent to cause damage, but the motive remains unclear. A senior police officer stated, “We are examining CCTV footage from the area and are working to identify the suspects. No official statement will be made until the investigation progresses further.”
This incident comes as a stark reminder of rising security concerns in high-profile urban areas.
Separate Incident in Punjab Raises Concerns
In a related and equally concerning event, a petrol pump in Punjab’s Mansa district was targeted with a grenade blast around 1 a.m. the same night. The attack was followed by an extortion demand of Rs 5 crore from the petrol pump owner, Khushwinder Singh, who received threats over WhatsApp from a foreign number.
The sender referred to the initial explosion as “just a trailer” and threatened further harm if the demands were unmet. The police have registered a case under criminal intimidation and extortion laws and are investigating the matter.

Kriti Sanon starrer Meena Kumari biopic shelved as Manish Malhotra exits project
Renowned designer-turned-filmmaker Manish Malhotra has officially stepped away from directing the much-anticipated Meena Kumari biopic, which was initially set to feature Kriti Sanon in the titular role. The news comes as a surprise to fans and the industry alike, considering the buzz surrounding this ambitious project.
Malhotra’s Journey from Fashion to Films
Over the years, Manish Malhotra has cemented his legacy as a maestro of glamour and couture. However, his foray into filmmaking with Saali Mohabbat, which recently premiered at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), has revealed his passion for storytelling beyond fashion.
Speaking about the transition, Malhotra shared, “My dream with Stage 5 was to start a different narrative from what’s expected out of me. People expected my films to star Kareena [Kapoor Khan] or the young girls, with lots of glamour. But this is not an extension of my brand. The most important thing is the script.”
Malhotra’s debut production, Saali Mohabbat, a middle-of-the-road thriller starring Radhika Apte, Divyenndu, and Anurag Kashyap, marks a distinct shift from his glamorous persona. Directed by Tisca Chopra, the film centers on themes of infidelity and deceit.
The End of a Dream: Meena Kumari Biopic Shelved
When asked about the status of the Meena Kumari biopic, Malhotra confirmed he is no longer associated with the project. “I’m no longer doing the biopic. I’ll direct something else. Directing is one dream that remains unfulfilled,” he revealed.
Filmmaking: A Natural Fit for Malhotra
While the designer has shelved the biopic, his passion for filmmaking is undeterred. “All fashion designers don’t have a film sense, but some do. With me, it was organic because I was in love with films since childhood,” he said. Malhotra’s love for classics like Mughal-e-Azam and the works of Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt has influenced his creative pursuits.
Despite stepping back from the Meena Kumari project, Malhotra has other films, such as Bun Tikki and Ul Jalool Ishq, in the pipeline.
