Jamtara producer Manish Trehan accused of cheating businessman for Rs 2.5 crore: Report

Jamtara producer Manish Trehan accused of cheating businessman for Rs 2.5 crore: Report

Manish Trehan, the producer of the popular Netflix web series Jamtara, has been booked by the Mumbai Police for allegedly defrauding a businessman, Nihar L, of Rs 2.5 crores. The allegations suggest that Trehan misled Nihar under the pretext of financing a film project and expanding his business.

Details of the Allegations
According to a report by Indian Express, Nihar, a 40-year-old businessman running a finance service firm, met Trehan in October 2022 through a mutual contact. Trehan, who introduced himself as the director of Click On RM Pvt Ltd, assured Nihar that he would return the money within a year, along with interest. Trusting Trehan’s assurances, Nihar transferred Rs 2 crores to him for business expansion via an online transaction.

As the one-year term concluded in October 2023, Trehan visited Nihar’s office, accompanied by a man named Satvant Singh, whom he introduced as a senior official from a well-known OTT platform. Upon asking for repayment, Trehan claimed that the invested money had gone into a film that was nearly complete, requiring only editing work. He then requested an additional Rs 50 lakh to cover final costs, assuring Nihar that the film would soon be sold to the OTT platform, allowing for the return of the money.

Trusting Trehan yet again, Nihar transferred an additional Rs 50 lakh on October 5, 2023. Trehan subsequently provided a written loan agreement acknowledging the total Rs 2.5 crores loan and issued four post-dated cheques to be cashed by March 31, 2024.
Fraudulent Activity Uncovered
However, when Nihar attempted to deposit the cheques, he discovered they had been declined due to a stop payment order placed by Trehan. After multiple unsuccessful attempts to contact Trehan, who allegedly blocked Nihar’s calls, the businessman approached senior police officials to register a complaint.

The Santacruz police have now booked Trehan and Singh under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), and 34 (common intention). Furthermore, Nihar accused Trehan’s wife of involvement, though her name does not appear in the FIR.
Response from Trehan’s Legal Team
In response to the allegations, Trehan’s lawyer, Shivam Deshmukh, stated that Trehan had already repaid part of the loan amount. He claimed that Nihar and his father had coerced Trehan into making an immediate cash payment of Rs 1.6 crore. Deshmukh emphasized that Trehan has been cooperative with authorities and alleged that the FIR was filed to meet Nihar’s unlawful demands.

FIR writer Amit Aaryan SLAMS Kapil Sharma’s show for vulgar jokes and disrespecting women, calls it “worst show in the history of Indian comedy”

FIR writer Amit Aaryan SLAMS Kapil Sharma’s show for vulgar jokes and disrespecting women, calls it “worst show in the history of Indian comedy”

Popular comedian Kapil Sharma has faced significant criticism from renowned writer Amit Aaryan, best known for his work on the TV show FIR. In a recent interview with Digital Commentary, Aaryan labeled The Kapil Sharma Show as “the worst show in the history of Indian comedy.” He expressed his discontent with the show’s reliance on vulgar jokes, particularly those directed at women.

Criticism of Disrespectful Portrayal of Women
In his remarks, Aaryan singled out certain characters on The Kapil Sharma Show, calling them disrespectful towards women. He specifically criticized Krushna Abhishek’s portrayal of “Sapna,” a recurring character on the show. “Women are supposed to be respected,” Aaryan said, pointing out that Sapna’s character often resorts to inappropriate, below-the-belt humor.

He further talked about the need for more respectful treatment of women in comedy, stating, “The jokes made at the expense of women’s dignity are unacceptable.”
Not Sharma, But Supporting Characters Drive the Show
Aaryan also claimed that the success of The Kapil Sharma Show is not solely dependent on Kapil Sharma himself, but on the supporting characters. He observed, “If you watch The Kapil Sharma Show carefully, it’s not him who is running the show, but the other characters.” Aaryan even referenced Sharma’s Netflix special Kapil Sharma: I Am Not Done Yet, claiming that the show didn’t gain much attention because audiences are less interested in Sharma’s individual performances.
Critique of Today’s Comedy Trends
Beyond The Kapil Sharma Show, Amit Aaryan criticized modern comedy in general. He believes that today’s audiences have been exposed to poor-quality humor. “The problem is today’s generation hasn’t been exposed to good comedy, so they laugh when someone fat-shames and body-shames others,” he remarked.
The Kapil Sharma Show Continues on OTT
Despite the criticism, The Kapil Sharma Show remains popular. After moving from television to an OTT platform, the show is now in its second season. It continues to draw high-profile guests like Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, Jr NTR, and Saif Ali Khan. However, Aaryan’s remarks have reignited debates about the quality of comedy and its impact on viewers.

Meanwhile, Kapil has not responded to Aaryan’s criticism, as of now.

Amit Aaryan has a successful writing career, having worked on hit shows and films like FIR, Lapataganj, ABCD, Do Knot Disturb, and Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai.

Harman Baweja acquires Hindi distribution rights of Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth starrer Vettaiyan, calls it “once-in-three-decade phenomenon”

Vettaiyan has created immense excitement among fans, as it marks the reunion of two cinematic legends, Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth, after 33 years since their last collaboration in Hum (1991). Actor-turned-producer Harman Baweja, who is distributing the Hindi version of the film, believes this collaboration is a monumental moment in Indian cinema. “It’s a once-in-three-decade phenomenon. It’s one for generations to watch,” a report by Mid-Day quoted Baweja.

The Director Behind Vettaiyan
Directed by TJ Gnanavel, Vettaiyan also stars acclaimed actors Fahadh Faasil and Manju Warrier. Gnanavel’s previous work on Jai Bhim (2021) impressed Baweja and played a key role in his decision to join the project. “I had watched Jai Bhim and knew this director was special. He is a solid storyteller,” said Baweja, expressing confidence in the action drama’s cinematic value.
Harman Baweja’s Shift to Production
Though Harman Baweja made a notable acting comeback in 2023 with the series Scoop, he has now shifted his focus to production. His current priority is Baweja Studios, with upcoming projects like Boy from Andaman, directed by Richie Mehta. “The focus is Baweja Studios. That is where I am at, for the next few months,” Baweja stated, explaining his passion for producing films that resonate with both Indian and international audiences.

Baweja’s collaboration with Mehta, known for Delhi Crime (2019), has been an inspiring experience. “Collaborating with Richie has been brilliant. He has one of the strongest visions as a filmmaker,” Baweja remarked, highlighting his goal of creating films with a global appeal.

Coming back to the film, a couple of weeks back, the makers dropped the trailer of the film. It delves into the controversial topic of encounter killings and human rights violations. Vettaiyan is slated for release on October 10, 2024.
