Multiplex Association of India takes legal action against Indian 2 team for violating OTT release guidelines

Multiplex Association of India takes legal action against Indian 2 team for violating OTT release guidelines

The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) has sent a legal notice to the team behind the film Indian 2 for flouting the agreed-upon OTT release guidelines. The sequel to the 1997 cult classic Indian, directed by Shankar and starring Kamal Haasan, was released on July 12, 2024. Despite high expectations, the film failed to perform at the box office. However, controversy erupted when the Hindi dubbed version of Indian 2 appeared on Netflix well before the mandated 8-week OTT window.

MAI’s strict guidelines for Hindi releases
The MAI has established clear rules for the theatrical release of films in Hindi, including an 8-week window before they can be streamed on OTT platforms. The guidelines are designed to protect the interests of the theatrical exhibition sector, ensuring that films have a fair run-in cinema before becoming available online. Producers who violate these rules face consequences, including potential bans from major multiplex chains like PVRInox and Cinepolis.

Early streaming sparks legal action
According to sources, the MAI was shocked to discover that the Hindi version of Indian 2 was already streaming on Netflix, weeks before the agreed-upon date of September 6. This breach of agreement prompted the MAI to take legal action, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the 8-week window. The association sees this as a serious violation and aims to send a clear message to other producers that such actions will not be tolerated.

Implications for the industry
The MAI’s decision to pursue legal action highlights the growing tension between theatrical exhibitors and OTT platforms. As more producers push for early digital releases, the MAI is determined to uphold its guidelines to ensure that the cinema industry remains viable. The outcome of this legal notice could set a precedent for how similar situations will be handled in the future.

The much-loved entertainer Baadshah (1999) completed 25 years on August 27. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, the film has a tremendous recall value and is a big hit on satellite. It’s not uncommon nowadays to see sequels being made of films that came more than two decades ago. The trend began when Gadar 2 (2023) became an all-time blockbuster just like Gadar (2001). Border 2 is also being made and is already one of the most awaited films. On Baadshah’s 25th anniversary, Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke with Ratan Jain of Venus Records And Tapes Pvt Ltd about whether a sequel of Baadshah can be made.

Ratan Jain replied, “I keep talking to Shah Rukh and we discuss what should we do next. But the first sequel I’d like to make with Shah Rukh is Baazigar 2, followed by Baadshah 2.”

Baazigar (1993) marked the first collaboration between Shah Rukh Khan, Venus and also director duo Abbas-Mustan before they joined hands once again for Baadshah. Baazigar was a huge hit and boosted SRK’s stardom. He also acted in Venus’ Yes Boss (1997) followed by Baadshah and then Josh (2000).

When asked if the makers have a plot ready for Baazigar’s sequel, Ratan Jain replied, “No, but we keep discussing about it. The day we get the right subject and director, we’ll make the sequel. And of course, it will be made only with Shah Rukh. And he has supported the idea. But as I said, we need to get the correct idea. The times are such that agar film karein, toh bahut acchi karein. Nahin toh na karein.”

Recently, there were reports that Kapil Sharma and Venus would be back with the sequel to the former’s debut film Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon (2015). Ratan Jain confirmed that the second part of the comic caper is being made. He said, “There are some films in the pipeline. We are planning a sequel to Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon. That hopefully should go on floors soon. We are in talks with Akshay Kumar.”

EXCLUSIVE: “Bicycle Thief to see Scam 1992 star Hemant Kher and Samvedna Suwalka in double roles,” reveals director Dr. Darshan Ashwin Trivedi

Filmmaker Dr. Darshan Ashwin Trivedi has Ek Ruka Hua Faisla in the pipeline. The film is an adaptation of Basu Chatterjee’s 1986 film of the same name. But along with that movie, he has also completed shooting a film interestingly titled Bicycle Thief. The title is similar to the classic Italian film Bicycle Thieves (1948). In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, Trivedi revealed that it is his tribute to the film’s director Vittorio De Sica.

“I have been a huge fan of Vittorio De Sica’s work,” he said. “The film is based on a true incident that happened in the early 1990s. It’s about the theft of a bicycle. It’s more of a sarcasm because there are a lot of things that have changed around bicycles. (But) from 1948 to 1990s, things haven’t changed much (otherwise), so bicycle is also that motive that I wanted to use. I wanted to keep this title and pay my tribute to Vittorio’s neo-realism and his entire contribution to Italian cinema.”

The film stars Scam 1992 star Hemant Kher and Samvedna Suwalka. “The twist in the tale is that both of them are playing a double role in the film,” revealed Trivedi. But there is more to it. “The entire film is shot hand-held. There is not a single shot where we have put the camera on a tripod,” he added. Both Kher and Suwalka are also starring in Ek Ruka Hua Faisla.

Sharing about the current status of Bicycle Thief, Trivedi said, “The film completed its shoot in June this year. Right now, it’s been edited by Amitabh Verma. I keep visiting the edit. It’s looking interesting. From whatever I have seen, it looks a bit more than my expectations. I am very hopeful about that film.”

As far as the release of Bicycle Thief is concerned, it will first have a film festival journey. “It has a very good merit to go to the festivals,” said Trivedi. “We wish to have it released in theatres. One really wants every film to release in theatres because that’s the ideal moksha of films.”
